Interventions that should not be used

The following advice is adapted from NICE Guideline CG170: Autism in under 19s: support and management []


NICE have recommended that clinicians should not use the following treatments for core features of autism:

  • Antipsychotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Exclusion diets (such as gluten- or casein-free diets).
  • Neurofeedback or auditory integration training
  • Omega-3 fatty acid supplements
  • Secretin
  • Chelation
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
