Discovery School hosted by Cardiff University

Dear all,

Discovery School hosted by Cardiff University

I am writing to you with regards to the Discovery Summer School at Cardiff University. The residential summer school is aimed at young learners on the Discovery Programme, a programme specifically for those who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), aged 14-19. It aims to raise aspirations and also to offer hands-on practical support to help the young people to continue with their studies post 16. It also means that learners are able to experience University life first hand and hopes to give students confidence and a real taster of how students live.

The summer school is residential and participants will be able to experience the complete package of student life, staying with current undergraduates in student flats and socialising with them too. The dates are Tuesdays 11th- Wednesday 12th July 2017 and it is a free summer school.

Participants on the Discovery School will benefit from the following experiences:

  • Spending time and staying in student accommodation with current undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Having academic taster sessions with experts in their chosen fields
  • Sessions which give advice on personal statements writing & mock interviews, budgeting and talks from support services
  • Seeing what life in the city is like as a university student
  • The opportunity to participate in the Step-Up and Step-Up Plus schemes in the future
  • Having taster sessions for opportunities outside of study, including societies and sports clubs

Please note that we are still developing the programme for this year, so no programme is available yet, but you can email me for more details if you would like to know more.

We have tried to make sure that we have been regularly available to contact and many of you will have attended our project throughout the year or attended an event such as Uni Inspiration Day.

Research from our other programmes shows that interacting with a University scheme helps young people become more familiar with a Higher Education setting and more likely to go on to study at University. We have also had people come through this programme go to university, including two people due to start in September 2017, so we hope this can be a really positive experience for all who attend.

How to take part

As there are some details that are required for monitoring and reporting purposes, there are two forms to fill in to book on to the summer school. Once these are completed and signed, please scan and send them back by email, or post to the address below, and we will be in touch to confirm your place.

Please be aware that we do have limited availability on the summer school, but there are certainly no grade requirements or restrictions placed on attendance other than that and we welcome all people who are interested where possible.

If you have any problems with the booking process or any questions about the Summer School, then I will be available as a main contact. My colleague Helena Fern will also be working on the project and is also happy to answer any questions that you may have.

We will be using a shared email address to make life easier for you to contact us and my office number is 02920874968.

I look forward to hearing from you again soon,
